Mother moving with us to HK?

I wonder if anyone can help me?

I'm potentially moving to HK early next year with my company, and would like to know how the HK govenment handles "near" relatives (ie: My Mother) coming to live with us in HK as well?

In the US there is a 5 year waiting and you have to become a citizian of the USA before you can "import" near relatives.. Whats the policy in HK?

Thanks in advance

dependent visa

Hi Dermot;

I took a look at the Immigration Department website (http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/hkvisas_1.htm) and found the following clauses:

38. For a sponsor who is a Hong Kong permanent resident or a resident who is not subject to a limit of stay (i.e. a resident with the right to land or on unconditional stay), the following dependants may apply to join him/her for residence in Hong Kong:

1. his/her spouse;
2. his/her unmarried dependent child under the age of 18; and
3. his/her parent aged 60 or above.

39. For a sponsor who has been admitted into Hong Kong to take up employment or study, or who is permitted to remain in Hong Kong as a capital investment entrant, the following dependants may apply to join him/her for residence in Hong Kong:

1. his/her spouse; and
2. his/her unmarried dependent child under the age of 18.

Dependants so admitted are not permitted to take up employment in Hong Kong. Dependent children can study in Hong Kong, but they are prohibited from taking up employment.

Seems pretty clear-cut, but DON'T just take my word for it -- on a question of this importance, I think you should contact the Immigration Department here and enquire formally. See this page for details: http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/contactus.htm
