I am planning to be visiting Hong Kong maybe around mid June. Now I have read that this time of the year, Hong Kong experiences Monsoun Rains as well as really hot and humid weather. Can someone tell me how it really is in Hong Kong at around mid June? Is it really that bad? Loney Planet writes that even if it is raining a lot, you should also keep in mind that it is summer there after all, too. What would I make from such a remark?! ;-)

Maybe someone can tell me more about the weather in Hong Kong right now and if I should come and see it for myself or better wait till the fall.

Don't get me started on the summer weather . . .

. . . but I guess you already have!

As a bit of a weather geek (see here, here and here, to get a taste of my obsession) I have a bit of advice: if you can visit Hong Kong in, say, October instead of June, do it.

My brother was just here for a two-week visit, i.e. during the last 10 days of May and the first few days of June. During that time, he experienced a total of two sunny/partly cloudy days. The other 10-11 were overcast and had at least some rain, and several days were total washouts. This was a particularly bad stretch, even for HK, but May and June are simply very wet.

And when it's not raining, it's pretty hot. You can expect daytime temperatures in the low 30s with intense humidity, with very steamy nights as well.

October, on the other hand, is much drier, both in terms of less rain and lower humidity. And temperatures are still warm, with daytime highs in the high 20s. It's much closer to what 'summer' is like in a temperate climate.

Hong Kong summers are truly tropical, and frankly not many people really enjoy that kind of weather.

So, does that help? Let us know what you choose to do!

Summer rain

"Loney Planet writes that even if it is raining a lot, you should also keep in mind that it is summer there after all, too. What would I make from such a remark?! ;-)"

I think they mean that although it rains a lot, at least it's warm rain!

Next month we'll be packing for a trip to the UK, and will have to pack clothes for all conditions from cold rainy weather to hot sunny weather (small chance of the latter I know!). If you visit HK in the summer it may be wet or dry, but you can be sure it's going to be hot.
