Delaney's Kowloon

Basement, Mary Building, 71-77 Peking Road, TST
Tel : 2301.3980

No happy hour, so not somewhere we tend to go on a Friday night!

Good food though, so it's a batgung favourite for lunch.

Deck n Beer

To celebrate the first rain-free day in what seems like months, we decided that yesterday's Friday beer should be drunk somewhere outdoors.

I'd seen this place a few weeks back, and made a mental note we should try it sometime. It was great - right on the harbourfront, out of the late afternoon sun, and with a cool breeze.

It's at the northern end of the New World Centre in TST, just on the border of TST East. The quickest way there from TST MTR is to walk along Salisbury Road until you meet the seafront (I took exit J from the MTR). When you reach the seafront, turn right to the Avenue of Stars, and the bar is right there.

Or if you're coming from the TST Star Ferry pier you could take the more scenic route along the seafront, and you'll see the bar just before you reach the road.

It shares the low building with a Starbucks, so the big green Starbucks sign is probably the easiest thing to watch out for.

I didn't pay much attention to the indoor section, but it looked very small. Best save this one for good weather when you want to sit outside.

Bulldogs, Lan Kwai Fong

G/F, 17 Lan Kwai Fong, Central. Tel : 2523 3528
http://www.bulldogsbarandgrill.com/BGHK/index.php

I ended up at Bulldog's twice last week.

First when I met a friend who works in Central for lunch. Bulldog's do good pub grub.

Then on Friday we met with the usual group of friends for a beer. The pubs we visit on Fridays have to meet a very simple list of requirements:

Serve bitter on tap. Bonus points for anything unusual, but we'll settle for Tetleys, Boddingtons, etc.

Have a happy hour. We're cheapskates. I don't expect to spend more than $100 for 2 or 3 pints and some snacks.

Let us in. Given that we may have been hiking or swimming before reaching the pub, we don't need to be where the beautiful people are. (And given point #2, they aren't likely to be around anyhow!)

Bulldogs serve a good pint of Tetleys and have a happy hour til 8pm. Plus they get bonus points for being a non-smoking pub.

Zentro

IFC shop 2022 (podium level 2)
phone: 2899 2221

Zentro is located deep in the giant IFC complex, but since it's above the Central Airport Express Station, not in the main shopping area, it can be hard to find. You look here for IFC's own map giving its precise location.

Zentro may be a bit out of the way, but plenty of people manage to track it down, as it's often quite crowded, with people spilling out into the walkway outside the bar proper. The crowd typically comprises suits, air travelers, and batgung.

Le Jardin Club

Le Jardin Club is a bit of an enigma. Its name evokes something perhaps a bit more, shall we say, upscale (i.e. with actual walls and windows)? Le Jardin Club is actually a hole-in-the-wall, but comfortable and sporting quite a bit of character. It's also quite hard to find. The easiest approach is made by walking up D'Aguilar Street, turning right into Wing Wah Lane (i.e. directly away from Lan Kwai Fong), then following the lane around the corner until you reach some stairs. Climb them, and you'll be set.

Its details are:

1/F 10 Wing Wah Lane
Tel 2526 2717

P J Murphy's Irish Pub

P J Murphy's Irish Pub is well-located but easy to miss. It's right on Nathan Road in the very heart of the Tsim Sha Tsui tourist zone, but its entrance is just a doorway wide, leading down into the pub in the basement. Irish beers and ales predominate, and the atmosphere is kitschy but relaxed.

Murphy's details are:

Basement of the Imperial Hotel, 32 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui

Phone 2782 3383

The White Stag, across Lockhart Road from Carnegies, is another solid batgung-approved pub choice. It's a bit small, but comfortable enough.

Its details:

Carnegies

Carnegies is a long-standing favorite among batgung watering holes. Although it's deep in Wan Chai's dubious Lockhart Road district, it attacts a fairly respectable clientele. If it's too full, you can just look across the street at another of our options, i.e. The White Stag.

The batgung highly recommend you visit Carnegies between 6 and 7 pm, as this comprises 'Crazy Hour', in which drinks go for the astonishingly low price of HKD19. Happy hour then continues from 7 onwards for a couple of hours, but it's never quite the same . . . .

If you need the address and phone for Carnegies, there's as follows:

         G/F 53-55 Lockhart Road
Tel 2866 6289 or 3102 2066

Excelsior Hotel

In the basement of the hotel is the Dickens Bar. I love their lunchtime curry buffet (weekdays only), and we also head along there for drinks in the evening from time to time.

Up on top of the hotel is the TOTTs restaurant, with views out over the harbour. That has a Sunday brunch with unlimited fizzy wine, so a good place to go with a bunch of friends on a lazy Sunday.
