Rote learning or a passion for learning?

Good to see an example of passionate education in HK instead of the tedious rote learning so endemic in HK.

Nick Miller the principal of YMCA of Hong Kong Christian Collegeis a firm believer in encouraging students to reach their full potential in life not by tedious rote learning but by discovering their own talents and exploring opportunities to discover their self-worth, find out what they are good at and what they can do.

A recent example is the Tung Chung school's staging of the broadway musical - The Music Man - by Meredith Wilson. The play is produced and directed by Maureen Coulter, who teaches drama and English literature

Nick is critical of the Education Bureau, who have never visited the YMCA school and sees them as pushing compliance of the curriculi rather than good education. Invitations were extended to the bureau to come and see the play for free - I wonder whether they have enough free will to do so?
