Renting and housing allowance

Hi

I have been offered a job offer in Kowloon Tong with a 9000Hk pm housing allowance.

I would like to live around the Koloon Tong area so that I can be close to my work.

I am single and would like a decent ( not serviced or old crappy building)sized apartment preferably one bedroom.

My friends who live in HK says that 9000 HK wont get me much.

Please help!

Best to do an online apartment search on your own

Try this site - noone can tell you what it will cost to find an apartment that will make you happy. Everyone has their own needs. The online sites will let you look at multiple views or the apartment, its location and other info. Here is just one site... http://www.gohome.com.hk/english/ Good luck!

Kowloon Tong prices

I echo what jedward has said -- you're going to have to do some searching on your own to see what you really like and value, and gohome.com is a good place to start. This discussion thread here at batgung.com may help, and most of the articles listed out here are relevant.

But your HK friends are right: you very unlikely to find something in Kowloon Tong for that price.

You have two alternatives.

First, there's no law that says you can't spend more than your allowance. If you really want to be within walking distance of work -- and Kowloon Tong is an interesting and pleasant part of town -- then you may find this to be worthwhile.

Second, Kowloon Tong is perfectly-placed for convenience vis-a-vis Hong Kong's public transport system. It's at the intersection of two major train lines, and it's just a short hop on train or bus or minibus (i.e. 10-20 minutes) from several more affordable neighborhoods -- you might want to look at Shatin, Lam Tin, Hung Hom and Kowloon Bay, for example. Even my own neighborhood (Tiu Keng Leng, which is part of Tseung Kwan O, and hence slightly farther afield) is only about 20-25 minutes away from Kowloon Tong on the MTR, and there are definitely flats in new buildings in your price range there.

Good luck!
